SIA'S CAUSE
The impact "Sia," (a poetic short film), will have amongst audiences will be undeniable. When the world shut down during the global pandemic, we all became connected. No longer separated by class, race, sexuality...but then that feeling was short lived. The world felt the cries of Black lives being stolen at the hands of those who were sworn to protect and serve. We mourned as loved ones fought alone in hospital rooms with no vaccine in sight. This film explores a Black queer couple's journey as they navigate love, grief, depression, and isolation at the height of the social justice movement and global pandemic. Recently, GLAAD reported that racial diversity among LGBTQ+ characters has decreased year after year. Of the 153 LGBTQ+ characters on streaming series, 41 percent are people of color. This is a decrease of seven percentage points from last year. Our cause is to continue to be seen. To have our history told by members of our community, that are oftentimes not given an opportunity to showcase their talents. For Cashmere Jasmine (Director/Producer) and Ashlei Shyne (Writer/Executive Producer) elevating the voices of our community by hiring BIPOC LGBTQ+ cast & crew is crucial. Sia is written and directed by Black queer women who often times do not get to see themselves or their love depicted authenticlly in media. We are choosing to move the needle forward, and lift each other up while doing so.
